Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Branched shrubs or occasionally small trees 1.5–3.5 m tall.

Stems: Branches brown to reddish brown, slender, glabrous.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades linear–elliptic to linear–lanceolate or rarely narrowly elliptic, 1.5–4(–13) cm long, 0.3–0.7(–1.6) cm wide. Apex attenuate, slightly falcate. Base cuneate. Surfaces glabrous except sparsely pubescent with minute rectangular, glandular hairs at the very base, especially on younger leaves, on upper surface, and/or along margins, punctate, yellowish green with red bases when young, dark green when mature, closely spaced and clustered toward the branch tips. Margins entire, rarely with a few serrations, slightly revolute. Midrib prominent and submarginal vein evident, venation otherwise obscure. Petioles broad or narrow, (0–)1–3 mm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 1–3 in bracteolate fascicles among and below the leaves, pedicels 3–7 mm long, glabrous or occasionally sparsely minutely glandular puberulent. Flowers apparently unisexual (and the plants dioecious). Calyx 4–5(6)-lobed, usually deeply so, the lobes imbricate or valvate in bud, punctate or with secretory lines, lobes ca. 0.5–0.6 mm long, margins ciliate. Corolla of 4–5(6) petals; petals pale greenish yellow, the lobes nearly distinct or connate up to ½ their length, imbricate in bud, oblanceolate, ca. 3.5 mm long, puberulent within, margins ciliate. Anthers ca. 1 mm long in bud, apex with a small tuft of hairs. Ovary superior, 3–5(6)-carpellate, 1-celled; ovules few in a single row, ovary reduced and sterile or absent in staminate flowers; style very short or absent, terminal; stigma capitate-angled.

Fruit: Drupes dark purple; subglobose; ca. 5 mm in diameter. Seeds 1 per fruit; small; dark colored; subglobose; excavated at base.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Shrubby bogs and wet forest bordering bogs; occasionally in diverse mesic forest.

Elevation Range: 410–1,220(–1,370) m.
